Wakaru puts the Japanese line next to the English one — each word colored to match its translation, glowing as it’s spoken, one click from its meaning.
01What it does
Reading, meaning, and the grammar behind the form — 戦える is shown as 戦う + potential, not left as a mystery. Save a word and it keeps its sentence, the show, and a picture of the scene it came from.
Crunchyroll almost never ships a Japanese track. Wakaru looks the episode up in the community archive, syncs the timing against the English track, and verifies word-by-word that it really is this episode.
Each word glows as it’s spoken, so your ear and your eye learn together. Missed a line? One tap replays the sentence — at full speed, or slowed to 0.75× and back to normal the moment it ends.
Hover any word to hear it pronounced — exactly as written in the subtitle, not just its dictionary form.
Saved words become flashcards, spaced so the ones you know stop showing up. Your list syncs across devices, and exports to Anki or CSV any time — with or without an active subscription.
Also in the box: furigana over kanji, hover any English word for its Japanese, AI word alignment for the lines a dictionary can’t parse — each episode aligned once, then shared with everyone — per-episode timing nudge, and grammar notes on every particle.

04Questions
Yes — Crunchyroll ended free ad-supported viewing at the end of 2025, so watching anything there now takes a subscription (or Crunchyroll’s own free trial). Wakaru is not affiliated with Crunchyroll and doesn’t replace it; it runs on top of your own access.
Almost never. A typical episode offers fifteen subtitle languages and Japanese is not one of them. Wakaru fills that gap from the community subtitle archive, automatically.
No. Wakaru is a paid product with a 7-day free trial — long enough to watch a season’s worth of episodes and decide. The AI that aligns words costs real money per episode, which is what the subscription pays for.
Crunchyroll only, today. Other players are on the roadmap, but we’d rather do one site properly than three sites halfway.
Any. Complete beginners lean on the English line and pick up words by color; intermediate learners can shrink the English and use it only when stuck. Furigana over kanji is a toggle.
Subtitle text — sent to our server for word alignment — plus lookups of the words you click. No analytics, no browsing history, nothing sold. The privacy policy lists every request the extension makes.
