01What it does

Subtitles that teach,
not just translate

Click any word. Know it instantly.

Reading, meaning, and the grammar behind the form — 戦える is shown as 戦う + potential, not left as a mystery. Save a word and it keeps its sentence, the show, and a picture of the scene it came from.

Japanese subtitles, found for you

Crunchyroll almost never ships a Japanese track. Wakaru looks the episode up in the community archive, syncs the timing against the English track, and verifies word-by-word that it really is this episode.

Missed a line? Hear it again

One tap replays the sentence — at full speed, or slowed to 0.75× and back to normal the moment it ends.

Hover any word to hear it pronounced — exactly as written in the subtitle, not just its dictionary form.

Keep what you learn

Saved words become flashcards, spaced so the ones you know stop showing up. Your list syncs across devices, and exports to Anki or CSV any time — with or without an active subscription.

04Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Crunchyroll subscription?

Yes — Crunchyroll ended free ad-supported viewing at the end of 2025, so watching anything there now takes a subscription (or Crunchyroll’s own free trial). Wakaru is not affiliated with Crunchyroll and doesn’t replace it; it runs on top of your own access.

Doesn’t Crunchyroll already have Japanese subtitles?

Almost never. A typical episode offers fifteen subtitle languages and Japanese is not one of them. Wakaru fills that gap from the community subtitle archive, automatically.

Is there a free version?

No. Wakaru is a paid product with a 7-day free trial — long enough to watch a season’s worth of episodes and decide.

What about Netflix or YouTube?

Currently, Wakaru Subs works only on Crunchyroll.

What level of Japanese do I need?

Any. Even complete beginners can pick up words and start enriching their vocab, hover any word to hear how it's pronounced, easy for everyone! We also have tools to help you see how to pronounce words .

What data leaves my machine?

Subtitle text — sent to our server for word alignment — plus lookups of the words you click. No ads, no browsing history, nothing sold. We measure how our own popup and website are used, never what you watch. The privacy policy lists every request the extension makes.

Can I get a refund?

Yes! You can request a refund within 14 days of being charged. Just reach out by email in this time frame.
